Nettle

Abolitionist’s Apothecary Herbalist

Nettle is the In-House Herbalist for Freedom to Grow. She was born and raised in Brooklyn where her love for plants and community care took root. Growing up in New York City, her love for plant based medicine and the natural world began as a slow relationship; a walk in the woods, a familiar smell in the garden, essential oils around her mother’s house, slowly, the dots connected and the guiding theme of plants and their health giving properties shone through. She came to appreciate the rhythms, the beauty and the healing of the natural world.

After studying in England, Nettle became exposed to traditional healing methods, where she began to collect knowledge of preserving herbs and sharing medicines. While studying permaculture, Nettle began to see the expansive link between plant medicine and mutual aid. Inspired by her time volunteering with Herbalist Against Borders, Nettle spent time living in France and Greece supporting migrant communities- where she offered free herbal clinics to those who faced state violence.

Arriving in New Orleans in 2022, Nettle began as an inspired volunteer with Freedom To Grow. Since then she has become committed to building autonomous systems of health and care inspired by the natural world. Nettle is so honoured to be a part of the team at Freedom to Grow where she can continue to learn and share the wisdoms of plants guided by building communities free from state violence, prisons and policing.
